Take action against fungal growth

Infection Control Monitor, January 27, 2006

Microbial remediation is a relatively simple but expensive operation, perhaps best described as "controlled demolition" followed by cleaning. It is necessary to fix dangerous and unsafe conditions for patients caused by exposure to mold or other contaminants. If you identify visible fungal growth in occupied spaces,

  • identify all personnel who will be involved in the work and establish lines of communication with them

  • immediately determine the extent and nature of the remediation required to determine whether there is potential exposure for high-risk individuals

  • determine the practicality of taking certain critical areas out of service and sequencing the remediation work

  • identify the source of the moisture affecting the building and causing the fungal growth
