CMS officials answer therapy cap questions in APTA audioconference

Rehab Private Practice Alert, January 25, 2006

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) officials responsible for implementing the Medicare therapy cap told participants in an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) audioconference this week that the agency is working to make information available online about how much of the $1,740 therapy benefits allowed a patient has already received, reports PT Bulletin Online.

In the short term, though, physical therapists in private practice settings will have to call Medicare Part B carriers to obtain the information.

Since Congress has not yet passed the final legislation that would authorize a new exceptions process, CMS officials Dorothy Shannon, PhD, and Pamela R West, PT, DPT, MPH, explained that the agency cannot yet detail what the process will be for patients to apply for exceptions to therapy services received in 2006 in excess of the $1,740 cap.
