Reports find continuing disparities for Hispanics
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 24, 2006
Despite modest gains overall in the quality of healthcare for Americans, disparities in care for Hispanics continue to widen, according to two reports released January 9 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
The 2005 National Healthcare Quality Report and its companion 2005 National Healthcare Disparities Report measure quality and disparities in four key areas: effectiveness, patient safety, timeliness, and patient centeredness. The report found an overall national healthcare improvement rate of 2.8%, with much more rapid improvement in areas where there has been a focus to improve care, such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory conditions.
However, quality of care for Hispanics has declined in areas such as diabetes, patient-provider communication, and access to care, according to the reports. The reports are available online by clicking here, by calling 800/358-9295, or by sending an email to ahrqpubs@ahrq.gov .
