House to vote on Medicare payment freeze

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 24, 2006

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on February 1 on a final budget package that may include a payment freeze for physicians, according to American Medical Association.

If passed, the freeze would cause payment rates to remain what they were in 2005. Carriers would begin reprocessing claims already paid with the 4.4% cut in Medicare payments. Physicians will not have to resubmit claims, and all claims will be reprocessed no later than July 1.

Physicians will receive one lump sum back for the difference between what they received with the cuts that began January 1 and what they should have received based on the 2005 rates.
