North Carolina payer to supply free EHRs to 1000 docs

EHR Connection, January 23, 2006

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) will supply 1,000 high-prescribing physicians with e-prescribing tools, the health plan reports. The ePrescribe program will supply the doctors with e-prescribing software licenses, PDAs, and wireless network hardware for free. The program will also offer physicians a one-time upload of their patients' medical information, product training, implementation, and consulting.

BCBSNC expects the program to save roughly $250 per doctor per month and eventually aims to implement the program for all of its doctors in the state, pointing to an e-prescribing pilot in Massachusetts in which physicians reported saving up to two hours per day. BCBSNC covers 3.3 million members and will use DrFirst e-prescribing tools for the pilot.
