Pennsylvania physicians offered financial aid for e-prescribing

E-Health Trend Watch, January 20, 2006

Physicians in western and central Pennsylvania may receive as much as $7,000 each to help pay for 75% the cost of purchasing an electronic prescribing system, according to a November 16, 2005, article in modernphysician.com. The program is administered by the Pittsburgh Foundation and funded by a grand from Highmark, a BlueCross BlueShield affiliate. The systems will allow physicians to check whether a specific drug is on the plan's formulary and is covered by insurance. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will receive $8 million of the grant to be used for the e-prescribing portion of its electronic health record program.
