Officer pleads not guilty to hospital beating
Healthcare Security Weekly, January 23, 2006
A Chicago police officer pled not guilty last week to charges that he beat a man in a wheelchair at Norwegian-American Hospital in August, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Security cameras at the hospital allegedly captured images of the officer hitting a man with his club after shackling him. The hospital was initially treating the victim for stab wounds, but he was intoxicated and uncooperative.
The hospital called in the officer to talk to the man about the stabbing incident, but after refusing to stay in the wheelchair, the officer placed him in handcuffs and allegedly hit him 10 times in the face and torso.
The officer faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
