CA hospital increases security after gun incident

Healthcare Security Weekly, January 23, 2006

Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, CA, is installing a metal detector in its emergency room (ER) after a recent incident where a group of men entered the ER with a gun looking for someone, reports the Los Angeles Daily News.

Five men entered the ER earlier this month and one of them carried a gun as they walked around. One of the men swore at a nurse who asked him if she could help him. The men left before security arrived.

The hospital has dealt with gun problems in the past with armed guards and dogs, but hospital director June Snow told the Daily News that treating people safely makes the metal detectors a necessity.

The metal detector will only guard the ER entrance because it is the only hospital entrance open after 8 p.m.
