MN agency says violent hospital crimes are rare
Healthcare Security Weekly, January 16, 2006
The Minnesota Health Department recently released a report showing that serious crimes against patients are rare, reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The report showed only one "criminal event" in Minnesota hospitals between July 1, 2003, and October 6, 2004. The one event was a minor scuffle between a patient and visitor.
The report comes in the wake of a police investigation at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul, MN, about possible violent crimes against older female patients.
A 79-year-old patient suffering from pneumonia died after suffering a head injury caused by a fall back in November. Hospital workers found her naked on the floor with her gown across the room.
The investigation has yet to turn up any suspects as no one reported any suspicious activity at the hospital that night.
