Spitzer tactic clamps SNF neglect in New York

LTC Liability Monitor, January 12, 2006

Hidden cameras in nursing homes across New York state led to the arrests of 19 SNF employees last week, according to Newsday. The arrests were made at Jennifer Matthew Nursing Home in Rochester and Northwoods Nursing Home in Cortland, part of Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's crackdown on Medicaid fraud. Among other infractions, the cameras revealed residents who developed pressure ulcers because of neglect or were left lying in their own feces for hours while members of the staff watched movies, slept, left the building, or otherwise socialized.

Some staff allegedly moved call bells away from residents and stopped making their rounds altogether, Newsday reported. Neither nursing home has yet commented on the situation. Investigations continue into other state nursing homes. Read the Attorney General's consumer report, released last Thursday, at www.oag.state.ny.us.
