Surveillance cameras catch repeat offender at SC hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, January 9, 2006
Surveillance cameras at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston helped security catch a man accused of stealing $5,700 worth of computer equipment and racking up $3,200 worth of charges on stolen credit cards, reports the Charleston Post and Courier.
Earl Salley worked at a restaurant that serviced the hospital so he was familiar with the operations. He allegedly used a baseball cap and clipboard to blend in with his surroundings as he stole computers and credit cards from hospital rooms and staff.
Hospital officials say Salley knew where security cameras were and avoided having his face videotaped until the cameras eventually caught him loading two computers and a monitor into a truck.
The thefts took place over a two-month span. Authorities charged Salley with four counts of financial transaction card fraud and one count of grand larceny.
