HHS issues industry call to action

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 10, 2006

The healthcare industry should assess the proposed standards for electronic healthcare attachments for their relevance to current practices, according to an industry call to action recently issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

HHS extended the deadline for comments to January 23 in response to industry requests, and expects to release the final rule by the end of 2006. It stated that it accommodated the industry's request for more time with the expectation that the industry would provide comments on the viability of the proposed rule. The standards include

  • two X12N transaction standards, for requesting information and responding to requests
  • six Health Level 7 (HL7) specifications for the content and format of communicating the actual clinical information, along with the HL7 implementation guide and Clinical Document Architecture
  • the LOINC code set: Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes for specific identification of the additional information being requested, and the coded answers that respond to the requests
