Santa Barbara SNF faces new allegations

LTC Liability Monitor, January 5, 2006

La Cumbre Senior Living Concepts in Santa Barbara, CA, received $2.5 million in penalties and fines three years ago for neglectful care. The nursing home now faces new allegations, so much that the state has stopped Medicare and Medi-Cal payments for all new residents, the AP reported.

A September inspection of La Cumbre revealed that nurses failed to assess and properly treat a resident's continuing complaints of pain, that a resident with dementia wandered away three different times during the year despite wearing an alarm, and that nurses failed to develop a tailored care plan for a resident with a contagious skin disease.

La Cumbre, owned by Idaho-based Helping Hands, has until March 30 to improve its level of care, or it will lose state reimbursements for all residents, the AP reported.
