Georgia facility to pay record settlement

LTC Liability Monitor, December 29, 2005

A Lawrenceville, GA, nursing home agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle neglect charges at the federal and state levels-the largest settlement against a single nursing home in U.S. history, according to the Gwinnett, GA Daily Post. A lack of proper care-including severe understaffing, inadequate employee training, high turnover, an ineffective medical director, and poor documentation-resulted in three premature deaths at Life Care Center of Lawrenceville.

The allegations against Life Care Center came from five whistleblowers, all of whom had family members at the facility, the Daily Post reported. Life Care, the Cleveland, TN-based company that owns the facility, will implement the government's recommended policies, including an independent monitor, under the terms of the settlement.
