Study finds med school faculty stressed, dissatisfied

Physician Practice Advisor, December 28, 2005

Stress among faculty members at U.S. medical schools has led to high levels of job dissatisfaction and anxiety, especially among younger faculty, with about 20% showing symptoms consistent with clinical depression, according to a report in the January issue of Academic Medicine.

The report was based on survey responses from 1,951 academic physicians and basic science faculty at four medical schools. Researchers said the rapidly changing healthcare environment, financial instability, and work-related strain had affected faculty members' mental health and job satisfaction. About 35% of survey respondents said strain from work interfered with family life, and 30% said they were "more edgy than in the past."

However, about half the faculty members solicited for the survey did not respond, and researchers said the results might not be representative of medical school faculty across the nation.
