JCAHO will not sell performance measurement data

JCAHO will not sell performance measurement data

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will not sell performance measurement data analyses to third parties, according to a November 21 statement released by the organization. The JCAHO will incorporate language to this effect into the contract of any accredited organization that requests its inclusion.

The JCAHO's statement addresses an ongoing dispute the organization has had with the American Hospital Association (AHA) over hospital performance data JCAHO shared with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as part of a pilot project. The AHA had been concerned about patient privacy violations and the fact that hospitals had no prior knowledge that their data would be sold to a third party.

The JCAHO reiterated that it has a long history of receiving and protecting patient-level information through its accreditation process and has never breached the confidentiality of health information. The JCAHO affirmed its continued need to secure access to patient-level performance data to support its ongoing accreditation-related measurement activities.
