Mt. Sinai patients to use smart cards
EHR Connection, December 16, 2005
A new patient smart card program at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City will provide patients with cards that store medical records, reports Newsday.com. If the system is standardized, patients will be able to carry their information with them to different facilities when they get treatment.
"If I am traveling in California and need emergency medical care, I can swipe the card into the system and up comes the medicines that I am taking, my allergies, and results from medical tests. We hope it will improve patient outcomes," said Paul Contino, Mount Sinai's vice president of information technology.
The card will store the information on a secure chip and a personalized number will allow access to the encrypted information. The card allows providers to override normal access procedures during an emergency, such as when the patient is unconscious.
