HL7 releases finalized standards

EHR Connection, December 16, 2005

Health Level Seven (HL7) released to its 2,000-plus members a suite of standards--Version 3 Normative Edition 2005, or V3--the most definitive specifications to date. V3 will provide a "significant contribution to solving the global problem of integrating healthcare information in a way that supports multiple goals, ranging from individual patient care to clinical research to public health," said HL7 Chair Mark Shafarman.

The standards focus on a variety of areas, including

  • semantic interoperability
  • universal applications
  • model-based specifications
  • technology-neutral standards
The Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration have already accepted the standards.
