Michigan SNF fire leaves two dead, 60 injured
LTC Liability Monitor, December 15, 2005
A nursing home in Ishpeming Township, MI, caught fire earlier this week, leaving two residents dead of smoke inhalation and sending 60 others to the hospital, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Police investigators have not yet determined the cause of the blaze, which was allegedly concentrated in two rooms of the 122-bed facility. They are also investigating whether the SNF's fire safety preparations were lacking.
The facility reportedly does have some sprinklers, but none in resident rooms. Residents were provided temporary shelter at a nearby church, as well as Ishpeming's town hall and a volunteer hospital. Nursing home spokespeople were mum on the extent of other resident injuries and the possible causes of the fire, according to the AP.
