UHF ranks healthiest states

Physician Practice Advisor, December 14, 2005

The United Health Foundation once again named Minnesota the healthiest state in the nation when it released its annual health-ranking of states this week. Minnesota has ranked No. 1 for 10 of the past 16 years and has never ranked lower than second since the rankings began in 1990.

The next-healthiest states this year are Vermont and New Hampshire. The rankings are based on 18 risk factors and health outcomes, such as premature deaths, infant mortality, and the number of uninsured residents in a state.

At the other end of the list, Mississippi ranks as the least healthy state, just below Louisiana and Tennessee. Those states have high rates of premature deaths, infant mortality, cardiovascular and motor vehicle deaths, and high percentages of children in poverty.
