Advocacy group examines mentally ill in nursing homes

LTC Liability Monitor, December 8, 2005

A Washington, DC-based group seeks to determine whether Connecticut is violating state and federal laws by not providing psychiatrically disabled nursing home residents the care they need and inhibiting their rights, according to the Associated Press (AP). The Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law suggests more than 2,700 nursing home residents in the state have psychiatric disabilities, but many reside in locked wards without proper psychiatric care or the ability to exercise their right to court hearings and status reviews.

Many psychiatrically disabled residents come from psychiatric hospitals, emergency rooms, or private homes. Because their care is monitored by the state Department of Health, the focus of the care is on physical treatment and not psychiatric, the AP reported.
