Scrushy resigns, fights for back pay

Richard M. Scrushy resigned as the HealthSouth director on Monday, citing his board's refusal to turn over documents or invite him to meetings, reports The Washington Post. However, Scrushy filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to change the board's proxy statement, saying he wanted to increase the board's size and nominate his own candidate to fill the position.
Scrushy was acquitted in June of fraud charges related to a $2.7 billion accounting scandal at HealthSouth. Prior to the trial, the HealthSouth board fired him as chief executive. Scrushy faces further charges but is pushing to recover the pay and benefits he lost after the HealthSouth board fired him.
"[HealthSouth was] pleased Mr. Scrushy has complied with our numerous requests for him to resign from the board. This is an appropriate and long overdue decision," said HealthSouth spokesman Andy Brimmer
