BCBS to open healthcare bank
Physician Practice Advisor, December 7, 2005
Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) will open a bank aimed at providing administrative and financial support for BCBS members enrolled in consumer directed health plans, health savings accounts, health reimbursement arrangements, and flexible spending accounts.
Blue Healthcare Bank is pending regulatory approval, and BCBS hopes to have it up and running by summer of 2006, reports The Los Angeles Times. The bank will offer debit cards allowing consumers to pay healthcare expenses out of their accounts and credit lines if costs exceed their savings, said Scott P. Serota, president and chief executive of the BCBS association.
Fifty-seven percent of employers say they are considering consumer-driven products and industry experts project total enrollment in consumer-driven products to eclipse 20 million by 2008, according to a BCBS press release. BCBS estimates that approximately 70 million of its members could benefit from Blue Healthcare Bank.
