Romania reports new cases of bird flu

Infection Control Monitor, December 2, 2005

According to Reuters, Romania has detected new cases of bird flu in a remote village in the Danube delta where health officials first discovered the deadly H5N1 strain in October.

Samples will be sent to a British laboratory to determine whether the infected birds had the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. Five hens and three other dead hens in the village of Periprava tested positive for the H5 type of avian flu.

Although the culling of up to 1,500 domestic fowl should soon begin as a precautionary measure, fears remain that the virus may have spread farther west-a turkey in a village 70 miles from the delta has tested positive for the H5 type of avian flu.

Romania has not yet reported any cases of bird flu in humans.
