Woman arrested for trying to steal infant

Healthcare Security Weekly, November 28, 2005

Police in Manning, SC, arrested Carolyn Mouzan last week after she attempted to steal a newborn baby from Clarendon Memorial Hospital, according to WISTV in Columbia, SC.

Mouzan allegedly entered the maternity ward Saturday afternoon and approached the baby's father. She told him that she needed to take the infant to the nursery, but the father was suspicious because she was in plain clothes.

After he told Mouzan that the baby was sleeping and she should come back later, Mouzan left the hospital. The father alerted nurses at the hospital, who then put the hospital on lockdown.

Mouzan had already left the facility, but security cameras caught her on tape, leading to her arrest.

Hospital officials say she would not have been able to leave the hospital with the baby because the doors out only open with a nurse's key.
