Roche teams with Gilead to produce more Tamiflu
Infection Control Monitor, November 18, 2005
As anticipated, Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche has agreed to share control of production and sales of the antiviral flu drug Tamiflu with Gilead Sciences, the biotechnology company that invented the vaccine, reports The New York Times.
Because bird flu is now an international concern, Roche was under pressure to produce more Tamiflu than it could. However, prior to the agreement, Roche and Gilead Sciences, which is based in California, were locked in a dispute over licensing of the drug.
Roche has estimated that Tamiflu sales this year will triple to at least $755 million.
