China confirms three human cases of bird flu, two deaths
Infection Control Monitor, November 18, 2005
The Chinese government confirmed the country's first three human cases of bird flu late Wednesday night, indicating the country is serious about improving communications and developing a global surveillance network around the world, The New York Times reports.
The handling of the cases contrasts with how China handled SARS in 2003 when provincial officials concealed information until the disease evolved into a global pandemic.
Two of the three bird flu cases resulted in death. International health officials are watching this development closely to see if the virus is moving more easily between humans.
