CDC will consider requests to borrow 1918 virus samples
Infection Control Monitor, November 11, 2005
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will consider releasing samples of the 1918 deadly flu virus to non-government research labs to aid in their research of deadly germs like the Spanish flu, reports the Associated Press.
Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, the CDC says.
Shipping biological agents is not an unusual practice; commercial carriers, like FedEx or DHS routinely ship them after packing the samples to meet security guidelines.
The CDC created 10 vials of the virus, each containing about 10 million infectious particles. The CDC headquarters in Atlanta is storing the vials.
