Doc wins discrimination suit against Las Vegas medical center

Physician Practice Advisor, November 23, 2005

A Las Vegas physician won a discrimination case against University Medical Center (UMC), taking home $310,000 after the November 15 verdict, reports The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Raafat Mohammadkhani, MD, was working as a staff physician at UMC in 2001 when the discrimination occurred under James Anthony, MD, Mohammadkhani's supervisor. Anthony told Mohemmadkhani that "ovaries and medicine don't mix, and male doctors make better doctors than female doctors," Mohammadkhani's attorney said. In addition, Mohemmadkhani alleged that Anthony made remarks about her origin-she was born in Iran to a Turkish mother and Russian father.

Mohemmadkhani filed two lawsuits, accusing UMC of discrimination and retaliation, which were eventually combined. She based her claim of retaliation on UMC's decision to transfer her to the most undesirable quick care center in the UMC network. The move extended her commute by two hours.
