Physicians take unfavorable view of Bush healthcare policies

Physician Practice Advisor, November 23, 2005

Physician support for President Bush, once strong, has plummeted in recent months, reports MP Stat.

"In the studies that we conducted during the 2004 presidential election, physicians expressed overwhelming support for President Bush," said Christopher Borick, associate political science professor at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. However, a recent poll finds that 55% of physicians disapprove of the administration's approach to healthcare.

The poll, conducted by HCD Research and the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, found that

  • 61% think there are "major problems" with the healthcare system
  • 45% say the threat of a pandemic of avian flu in the United States is real
  • 44% say the threat does not warrant attention
  • 52% say Bush is spending the wrong amount of money on the issue, compared with 39% who say he is spending the right amount
