Prerenal azotemia is a very serious condition that can cause permanent renal damage and failure. Being aware of the resident's risk factors, preventing dehydration, and providing close monitoring are all essential to prerenal azotemia prevention.

Regularly monitor at-risk residents' laboratory values. Other nursing measures for prerenal azotemia prevention include

  • monitoring fluid intake and output
  • carefully evaluating fluid intake and output every 24 hours and comparing with the dietitian's recommended fluid intake
  • monitoring weight
  • monitoring vital signs
  • monitoring level of conciousness
  • encouraging fluids
