MA man heads to jail for assaulting nurses
Healthcare Security Weekly, November 21, 2005
A Massachusetts man pled guilty to attacking two emergency room (ER) nurses at Salem Hospital back in February and will spend 90 days in jail for two counts of assault and battery, according to the Salem News.
Keith Harding admitted he went into a violent rage while receiving treatment at the hospital. He broke one nurse's hand after she tried to restrain him from ripping out an IV, and he shoved another nurse into a cabinet.
He also allegedly attacked two other nurses, a doctor, and a security guard, but none reported any injuries or pressed charges.
John Gordon, an associate director with the Massachusetts Nurses Association, told the News that the hospital must change the way it handles security because the incident was not isolated.
Hospital officials say they have since changed their policies, hired a new security director, increased security staff, and stationed a guard in the ER at all times.
