California officials lock horns over SNF complaints
LTC Liability Monitor, November 17, 2005
Two California state senators took the State Department of Health Services (DHS) to task this week over allegations that licensing officials are under-investigating nursing home complaints, the Sacramento Bee reported. The head of licensing for DHS, Brenda Klutz, responded by citing a lack of staff needed for such rigorous enforcement, saying the licensing department is struggling to keep up with limited resources. She also said an outdated computer system has prevented DHS from publishing recent inspection data as mandated by state law.
Ninety one percent of the most serious complaints in California are investigated within 24 hours, and of the less serious complaints, only 51% were investigated within the state-mandated 10 days, the Bee reported.
