Meds-stealing CNA headed for jail

LTC Liability Monitor, November 17, 2005

A former certified nursing assistant (CNA) at a West Virginia nursing home plead guilty to charges of neglect this week after she confessed to ingesting pain medication from a resident's time-release medicine patch, according to the online newspaper Newsinferno.com. The day after applying a 72-hour transdermal pain relief patch, the CNA allegedly removed it from the resident's body, stuck a pin in it, and sucked out the medication within.

A second nursing assistant became suspicious after the CNA requested assistance to reapply the patch, Newsinferno.com reported. The incident, which occurred at Moran Manor Nursing Home in Westernport, WV, carries 18 months of jail time, probation, substance abuse treatment, and a permanent ban from caring for "vulnerable adults."
