Some practices join forces to buy EMRs in bulk
Physician Practice Advisor, November 16, 2005
Intimidated by high start-up costs and unsure of how to choose a product, many physician practices are buying electronic medical record (EMR) systems in bulk, reports HealthLeaders Media.
Physician practice associations and organizations are taking the extra steps to bring the more than 470,000 office-based physicians into the EMR world. "There's a window right now," says Debra J. Munley, director of practice quality for Denver-based Physician Health Partners. The firm is launching an EMR initiative for an independent practice association made up of 50 practices. "If we don't help them, they'll start picking their own. But it's difficult for an individual office to get this done."
In addition to Munley's firm, Rhode Island and California are seeing large practices and medical groups combine their resources to make the work of choosing, buying, and establishing an EMR easier.
