MI man escapes custody in hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, November 7, 2005
A man in police custody escaped from St. John Hospital in Madison Heights, MI, while changing clothes in a bathroom, according to the Detroit News.
Leonard Hunter Tokar, who was in the hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries after police arrested him for kidnapping a woman at knifepoint, was able to flee authorities and run out to the parking lot.
Tokar then carjacked a 77-year-old woman and got away.
Police unshackled Tokar to allow him to change in a hospital bathroom, but are unsure how he escaped. Police caught up to Tokar the next day after a high-speed chase and a statewide manhunt.
