NQF head to step down, take over as Medsphere

Quality Improvement Monitor, November 10, 2005

Days after receiving word he had won a national quality award, Kenneth Kizer, MD, MPH, announced he is leaving the National Quality Forum (NQF) to head a healthcare information technology company.

Kizer will take over as chief executive officer of Medsphere Systems Corp. of Aliso Viejo, CA, on December 1. Kizer currently serves as chairman of the company's board of directors, a role he will continue, according to a press release.

Kizer helped pioneer the systemwide implementation of electronic health records and bar-code medication administration while he was undersecretary for health at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Kizer served in that role from 1994-1999 before heading up the nonprofit NQF.

The JCAHO on November 9 gave Kizer the Ernest A. Codman Award for his work with the NQF in healthcare quality improvement.
