Recovered bodies ruled insufficient for evidence
LTC Liability Monitor, November 3, 2005
The bodies recovered from nursing homes and hospitals in New Orleans in the wake of recent hurricanes were too decomposed to yield sufficient criminal evidence, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The coroner's office will therefore rule the deaths as "Katrina-related" and will not lend credence to rumors that some elderly patients at Memorial Medical Center were euthanized.
The state already brought negligent homicide charges against the owners of St. Rita's Nursing Home, where more than 34 residents died in flood waters. Toxicology reports to determine whether some residents or patients at either location were drugged are forthcoming, the Times-Picayune reported. Investigations continue into both St. Rita's and Memorial, the latter thus far yielding more than 70 subpoenas in a police probe.
