Roche halts shipments of Tamiflu

Infection Control Monitor, October 28, 2005

A drug manufacturer has temporarily halted shipments of Tamiflu to ensure adequate supplies will be used to treat conventional flu cases this season, reports The New York Times.

Roche, which is based in Switzerland, believes some companies are creating their own stockpiles to treat employees in the event of a bird flu pandemic.

Many countries are scrambling to stockpile Tamiflu, and Roche has been unable to meet the demands. Last week the company said it is considering allowing other companies to make the drug.

Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, can reduce the duration of the flu or, in some cases, prevent it. It is unclear how well it will work against bird flu.
