EEE claims another victim in New Hampshire

Infection Control Monitor, September 30, 2005

Another person in New Hampshire has contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), bringing the total number of cases to seven this season, reports The Portsmouth (NH) Herald.

Two of those people have died from the mosquito-borne illness, which affects the central nervous system.

In response to the outbreak, Sen. Maggie Hassan is proposing legislation in the Senate-and Rep. James MacKay in the House-that would streamline the permitting process for spraying pesticides and provide financial aid to communities where the spraying is needed.

There is no treatment for EEE, only the option of eliminating mosquitoes, but some communities find the process either too expensive or environmentally inappropriate.
