Music therapy can help insomnia
Rehab Private Practice Alert, November 2, 2005
A New York therapy center is using a technique called Brain Music Therapy (BMT) to help patients with insomnia and anxiety, reports the Whittier (CA) Daily News.
The treatment typically is performed by psychiatrists, but some therapists are beginning to use it as it can also help with drug rehab and children with attention deficit disorder.
BMT involves listening to music designed specifically for the individual patient after using an electroencephalogram to capture brain waves.
The waves are then translated into music using algorithms, and the clinic makes CDs for revitalization and relaxation. The patient listens to the CD every night prior to sleeping, and it can help make for a sound night of sleep.
Dr. Galina Mindlin of the Brain Music Therapy Center in New York is one of the few using the treatment, but she is trying to expand its use around the country. For more information on BMT, visit www.brainmusictreatment.com.
