BU tries to shift ideal degree from master's to doctorate

Rehab Private Practice Alert, October 26, 2005

Boston University's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is looking to shift the trend of therapists going out into the field with a master's degree to instead having therapists graduate with a doctorate, reports the Daily Free Press.

The schools program director, Diane Dalton, says the shift will make it so therapists are more well-rounded and will have to focus on patients all-around health, including nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Dalton says she believes that colleges need to teach their current students to be the leaders in the field for the next generation and that students need to spread the word about physical therapy, occupational therapy, human physiology, and exercise sciences.

The school has its students have a presence on campus with health fairs and a line of food products to promote healthy eating. Dalton says other rehab practices can do the same in their communities and that it works outside of a school setting.
