Charges dismissed in Iowa SNF case

LTC Liability Monitor, October 27, 2005

After a nearly six-year criminal investigation, federal prosecutors dismissed charges against SNF chain Care Initiatives, according to the Des Moines [IA] Register. The charges alleged that during a state health inspection of a Care Initiatives SNF, the company's regional director Larry Hinman and two nurses conspired to conceal the fall injuries of an 84-year-old resident. In 1999, state inspectors cited the SNF, Sioux City-based Indian Hills, for neglect and failing to prevent harm to its population. The resident's fall happened a month later, the Register reported.

Hinman and the nurses have reportedly accepted a pre-trial diversion program, in which they are not required to admit guilt but are placed on federal probation and might be required to make restitution. Care Initiatives is Iowa's largest nursing home chain.
