MA residents to have access to cost data for ASCs
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, October 25, 2005
A new online resource in Massachusetts will soon give patients access to information regarding the cost and quality of medical procedures in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs).
Launched last week, the Web site will offer information about quality and cost measures for more common medical procedures and will expand to include other ailments, according to Government Today.
The site currently offers data and statistics for hospitals, nursing homes, and physician groups, but will eventually include ASCs.
"In healthcare today, even ordinary procedures can have extraordinary variations in quality and cost," said Dr. Marylou Buyse, president of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, according to Government Today. "This new Web site will enable consumers to finally make good, informed choices about the best places to receive their care."
Although some states provide information about quality, Massachusetts in the first state to provide cost data.
"Making this information accessible is an innovative step, and we urge consumers to use the data, talk with their healthcare providers, and seek out additional resources to help them make the right decisions for themselves and their families," said Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
