Research targets unintentional weight loss
LTC Liability Monitor, October 20, 2005
Nursing home residents are at risk for significant unintentional weight loss. That's what drove researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles' Borun Center for Gerontological Research to spend five years developing a nutritional care program to significantly increase food and fluid consumption in SNF residents.
Nursing homes can follow certain guidelines to achieve better monitoring of resident's consumption and healthier diets, according to a Borun Center press release. Facilities need to adopt standards for resident meals and feeding assistance, which include staff observation of the frequency and duration of meals and concentration on feeding assistants.
