Ohio SNF resident dies after fall in stairwell

LTC Liability Monitor, October 20, 2005

A 90-year-old resident of Autumn Aegis Retirement Community in Lorain, OH, died after tumbling down a flight of stairs in her wheelchair, reported the Lorain Morning Journal. The woman managed to wheel herself through a doorway normally used only by staff and family members-a door usually locked and operated by a code given to staff.

The Ohio Board of Health has not yet investigated the incident, which occurred last week. A spokeswoman for Sprenger Retirement Centers, which operates Autumn, said the SNF will conduct its own internal investigation to determine why the door was open and why its alarm did not sound, the Journal reported.

The incident wasn't Sprenger's first security-related accident; in 2004, an 82-year-old man died after falling out of a third-floor window at Sprenger's Amherst Manor.
