Report questions antipsychotic drug prescriptions

LTC Liability Monitor, October 20, 2005

Researchers are questioning the appropriateness of prescribing antipsychotic drugs to some SNF residents. Less than half of residents on antipsychotic drug therapy received the drugs in accordance with nursing home guidelines, according to an article from the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Further, 23% of the 693,000 residents studied had no appropriate clinical reason for receiving antipsychotics. Research also showed SNFs administered these drugs to residents in more than the maximum dosage recommended 17% of the time. Overall, the study detected nursing homes are administering the highest level of antipsychotics in 10 years.
