Blue Cross launches quality reporting program

Quality Improvement Monitor, October 20, 2005

A national program providing quarterly performance reports to hospitals and employers aims to encourage the use of quality data to improve hospital care, Modern Healthcare reported October 19.

The Network Hospital Measurement program, announced October 18 by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, will use 18 evidence-based measurements, such as giving a heart-attack patient aspirin upon arrival, to improve the quality of care at Blue Cross network hospitals.

The reports will be based on publicly reported data from the CMS and the JCAHO, Modern Healthcare reported.

Eighteen Blue Cross companies, covering more than 80% of their 93 million nationwide subscribers, will participate in the program. Forty independent, locally operated Blue Cross companies contract with 80% of all U.S. hospitals and 90% of U.S. physicians, Modern Healthcare said.
