TX rehab center tries to recover after losing school contract

Rehab Private Practice Alert, October 19, 2005

The Permian Basin (TX) Rehabilitation Center is still trying to recover after losing its contract with a local school district, reports the Odessa American.

The center lost its contract in July 2004 after 18 years of providing the Ector County district with occupational and physical therapy. Permian Basin lost its contract by being outbid by $2,000 by another competitor.

Losing the contract took about a fifth of the center's $1.6 million budget. The center is now trying to shift from a school-based to a clinical-based facility, with mixed success so far.

The changes have led to a large rate of staff turnover, which has caused staff shortages because of the clinic's difficulty to recruit qualified therapists to west Texas.

To make up for some of the financial losses due to the loss of the contract, the clinic tries to do fundraising since it takes on patients from all walks of life, some who have trouble paying.
