SC police investigate doctor impersonator

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 10, 2005

Police in Seneca, SC, arrested A.J. Bixby for impersonating a doctor at Oconee Memorial Hospital, reports Fox News Carolina.

But more concerning than Bixby's acts were the hospital's lack of security checks. Bixby entered the hospital with a lab coat on and told administrators he practiced medicine and specialized in infectious diseases, such as AIDS. Hospital staff gave Bixby a high-access security badge and allowed him to walk around to areas where the public is not allowed.

Bixby did not treat or touch any patients, and says he did not enter any patient rooms or look at any medical records. He also says he runs a lab out of his home called Infectious Disease Educational Center and Emergency Care where he provides counseling, testing, and treatment for patients with H.I.V.

But authorities say Bixby does not have a license to practice medicine and was arrested 20 years ago for pretending to be a police officer.

The hospital is investigating how Bixby was able to obtain a security badge so easily.
